Grass of the month - October
Carrie Allen
As the weather turns cooler and we all start to feel a distinct nip in the air, thoughts undoubtedly turn to autumn and the beautiful rich colours it brings to the plant world.
To that end, we have chosen the Panicum Virgatum as our grass of the month for October. This lovely plant transforms throughout the autumn months from green to bright red and dark crimsons, with the seed panicles taking on the same colour. Other varieties such as Prairie Sky and Heavy Metal turn to a warm honey yellow, lighting up a late autumn garden.
Panicums come from the north American prairies and form stiff, upright clumps which produce light, airy seed panicles. They contrast beautifully with the larger, more feather-like seed heads of other grasses.
Larger growing varieties such as Warrior and Cloud Nine add height and movement and are useful for screening. Smaller growers like Shenandoah and Hanse Hermes make great additions to herbaceous borders, adding upright form and late colour.
You can find the Panicum Virgatum for sale at our on-line store, along with dozens of other beautiful ornamental grasses. Do come and visit us!
