Trimming your Ornamental Grasses
hannah read
The care of our grasses here at Meadowgate is a full time job. All year round, there is something to be done. The end of March / beginning of April, trim your cool season evergreen grasses such as Festucas. Grass varieties like Festucas grow all year round, but particularly in Spring, so it’s important to trim to a tidy shape to ensure healthy new growth.
If you’re looking for something to do in the garden this weekend, and you haven’t already cut your deciduous grasses back, this is the perfect time to do it.
At this time of year, all the deciduous grasses have been cut down on the Nursery (regardless of if they are being despatched). This ensures you receive a healthy and undamaged plant, ready to start its growth for the year once planted. If you have queries about how this may effect the varieties on your order, please contact us.
Warm season grasses such as Miscanthus will start to grow as the day and night temperature increases, so cut off last years growth as low to the ground as you can before the new leaves appear.
We have some new varieties coming soon to the website including the Miscanthus sinensis ‘Dreadlocks’ you can see below.
We feed our grasses with a free draining peat reduced compost with our own mix of slow release fertiliser, to suit the needs of each particular grass. As Ornamental grasses are generally pest free we don’t use any chemicals on the nursery.
Our expertise and care throughout the year means that you can be sure of a healthy grass, ready for planting. If you need help with caring for your grasses after purchase, please let us know and we will be happy to advise you.
